See ESC Events in action... A Night of Heroes, ITV, 9pm
ESC Events are once again proud to have been asked to stage The Sun's prestigious Military Awards - The Millies.

This year held at London's Imperial War Museum, an exciting but challenging venue, ESC organised the event televised tonight by ITV.

The awards, now in their second year, were conceived by Prince Charles and The Sun newspaper to honour our exceptional men and women of the Armed Forces.

"These very special awards allow us, the general public, to formally recognise and reward those members of the Armed Forces for their incredible bravery and dedication and we at ESC are honoured to be asked once again to stage this very special occasion" says MD, John Wickens.

The challenge this year was to create an event as spectacular as last year with a very short build and strike period. The museum is open to the public all year round but thanks to the very special nature of this event they agreed to close the museum for 1 day (the first time in the history of the museum this has happened) to allow ESC and their team to create the setting for these great awards.

The museum closed at 6pm on Monday 14th December and ESC and it's team moved in with 24 hours to go till Showtime.

The first challenge was getting around the many obstacles in this exciting space. The largest of which being a 4.7 tonne Schwerer Shell which had to be moved, alongside various other military exhibits.

The team worked through the night and at 6pm on Tuesday guests arrived to a real red carpet experience! The entrance way was flanked by flambeaux and storm lanterns and a breath-taking light show, with the surrounding trees bathed in reds and greens. Stunning military images and The Millies logo were being projected onto the facade of the building and search lights were piercing the cold December sky ensuring the exciting night that was unfolding within was seen for miles around!

Their Royal Highnesses Princes William and Harry hosted a VIP drinks reception for the nominees and their guests whilst other guests enjoyed a champagne reception wandering through the museum's impressive collection pieces, all perfectly in-keeping with the theme of the evenings' awards...

Guests made their way back through the museum to the newly revealed main atrium, by way of the removal of a 35 metre graphic wall. Here they entered instead a lavishly decorated dining hall and impressive stage for the awards ceremony itself.

Presented by Amanda Holden and Philip Scofield, the awards ceremony was produced by ITV and included a long list of celebrities from the TV, music and sports world. The highlight of these was Prince Harry presenting the Band of Mothers with a Special Recognition Award for all their incredible efforts in supporting families who have lost loved ones. Joe McElderry, The X Factor, winner performed his hit, The Climb, bringing the Awards Ceremony to a dramatic and emotional close...

Following the awards themselves a sumptuous 4 course dinner was served whilst guests were treated to another exclusive performance; the stunning girls of Britains Got Talents, Escala.

So the evening came to a close and it was left to ESC and it's team to clear out the museum ready for it's 10am opening to the public again. A challenge indeed but one that ESC happily accomplished!!

ESC helps turn The Sun blue: video

Once in a "lifetime" trip to Marrakech
On the 3rd September, twenty-five top performers from Lifetime Health & Fitness met our Creative Director Simon Woodward in Marrakech for a four-day incentive programme. Guests stayed at the five-star Le Meridien N'Fis, dined in various beautiful restaurants in and around Marrakech, rode quad bikes across the desert, shopped in the souks, rode camels, swam in lakes and indulged in spa treatments. The Moroccan weather didn't disappoint with temperatures reaching 40 degrees each day, and not a single cloud in the sky! Nigel Wallace, Director of Training said "We've been discussing the return on our investment with this trip, and firmly believe it was worth every penny. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the programme and your suggestions of where to stay, what to do and where to eat were absolutely perfect."

ESC Supports Make-A-Wish Foundation
Continuing their support of the fantastic Make-A-Wish Foundation UK - ESC Events were honoured to be invited to their evening of Champagne and Diamonds at Ritz Fine Jewellery at The Ritz, London on Wednesday 24th June 2009.

Like ESC Events, Ritz Fine Jewellery has supported Make-A-Wish for many years, in particular with the sale of the Make-A-Wish Pendant. A beautiful necklace which is now very firmly on our wish list along with a rather stunning pair of earrings!

The aim of the evening was to meet supporters and update them on Make-A-Wish whilst enjoying an exclusive evening of champagne, diamonds and the world famous Ritz Afternoon Tea.

The evening raised 1447 pounds through donations on the night and ESC Events were pleased to match that figure doubling the total for the evening! This added donation from ESC will help to fund even more magical wishes for some of the most deserving children imaginable fighting life-threatening illnesses across the UK.

In 2009 around 1,000 children will turn to Make-A-Wish to have their special wish granted and needs to raise 5 million pounds to fund these magical wishes.

ESC hopes to launch their inaugural charity ball next May, the proceeds of which will go to Make-A-Wish. Watch this space for news of that!

Exquisite Surrey Summer Wedding
June 09 saw Esc Events producing an exquisite Surrey summer wedding on a site that began somewhat dauntingly as a sloped marshland covered entirely in tall reeds.

The client had big plans of enjoying her wedding reception overlooking her own private lake from a luxurious marquee, a challenge Esc Events was only too happy to take on.

This proved to be a real challenge logistically; allowing the ambitious plans to be fully and safely realised. Whilst ensuring that the natural beauty of the setting was not compromised and that the structure followed the natural lines of the lake and marshland.

A layered scaffolding system was built to compensate for the sloped land up to 5m high in places. Following the line of the lake meant the bespoke 10m x 45m curved Mono pitched marquee had to be swung in on itself to 22.5 degrees at both ends on the platform. (The first of its kind built in the UK) giving the illusion of the whole structure rising up out of the lake.

The deck area was the centre point of the structure allowing views over the stunning setting. The dining area was set back from the balcony inside the marquee with clear walls ensuring that guests could enjoy full views of the lake and surrounding countryside come rain or shine.

Fortunately, glorious sunshine was the order of the day and the bespoke 5m high voile curtains provided attractive and practical shade for the wedding breakfast whilst not obscuring the views!!

On arrival the guests walked from the house up the purpose built walkway over the marshes and onto the terrace where they enjoyed champagne and canapes.

The marquee was ivory lined and the simple classic look of the wedding was carried through with beautiful wild flower arrangements.

As the natural light dimmed, the surrounding land and trees were illuminated, creating a backdrop to the evening with breathtaking effect.

Once the cake was cut, the happy couple disappeared momentarily until the secret wall to the nightclub was whipped away to reveal a waltzing bride and groom in the night club!!

The neon illuminated bar, chequered dance floor, black & red banquette seating and mirrored tables all set the scene for a night of revelry!!

The DJ kept the dance floor packed until the final magic moment of the night: A 8-minute firework spectacular skillfully choreographed to music.

The 150-strong audience was spellbound and the bride speechless; "words can't describe the wonderful firework display"!!

A very special day in an incredible setting

ESC produces The Sun Wondermum Awards at Claridge's
On Friday 22nd May ESC was very proud to produce The Sun Wondermum Awards at Claridge’s. A star studded awards ceremony honouring 6 of the country’s Wondermums.

These women were nominated by their friends and family as "people who are determined to make a difference to other people's lives. Whether it's working in the local community, raising money for charity or caring for those in need, they are ordinary people who do extraordinary things."

ESC managed all aspects of this prestigious and star studded event. Having chosen Claridges as the perfect venue to host the occasion, a glittering afternoon was choreographed. Guests were welcomed with a champagne reception in the foyer. A three course lunch followed in the Ballroom with roaming entertainment from a magician, balloon artist and caricaturist who kept the children and adults thoroughly entertained.

The tables were beautifully embellished with flowers and candelabras, creating a striking summer time feel.

The awards ceremony was then presented from a bespoke stage set, designed and constructed by ESC, and hosted by Jane Moore. Intelligent lighting, giant screens showing live and recorded VT and surround sound added to the excitement of the ceremony.

Introducing each of the winners was a short film, shot by ESC, showing them in their own homes, going about their daily, awe-inspiring tasks.

Each of the winners were presented with a bespoke hand crafted award, commissioned by ESC.

Sarah Ferguson attended the event and announced Sylvia Flintoft as the overall winner, having won the phone vote administrated by the Sun. She has devoted the past 38 years for caring for her disabled son as well as her daughter and husband when they became ill.

Sponsors Unilever and Asda were delighted with the event as well as one very pleased client from The Sun!!!

Malaria No More
To mark the launch of Malaria No More UK – a not-for-profit organisation committed to ending suffering and death caused by malaria – ESC Events were commissioned to create a couple of rather interesting props!!

A 6m x 4m four poster bed, 3m high complete with mosquito nets and a rather fetching mosquito costume.

The brief was to make a bed which would 'sleep' up to 10 people and would make a dramatic vehicle from which to show the Malaria No More message.  And what better way than with a 7’ mosquito buzzing around!!!

Launched on Monday 20th April Malaria No More UK is launching a campaign supporting that of Malaria No More which aims to:

  • Ensure every man, women and child at risk of malaria in Africa has access to a mosquito net by the end of 2010.
  • Eliminate malaria deaths completely by 2015

David Beckham, Andy Murray and Denise Lewis have been named as members of the Malaria No More UK Leadership Council starting with the simple message that for just £5 a bed net can be bought, transported and delivered to an African family protecting an entire family against malaria for up to five years.

Malaria No More UK Executive Director Sarah Kline says: “Malaria No More UK is launching a mass campaign to help stop the suffering and death caused by malaria. Our first mission is to help reach the UN target of getting everyone at risk in Africa under a bed net by the end of 2010.”

ESC Events are thrilled to have been involved in such a worthwhile cause.

Glittering award ceremony organised by esc events
On Tuesday 16 December, The Sun saluted the very best in a glittering award ceremony. In October 2008 they announced the launch of The Sun Military Awards, to be known as The Millies. Open for all serving members of the UK Armed Forces to be nominated in unless specifically stated. The awards are annual and this, the first ceremony recognised deeds and actions from September 1, 2007 to August 31, 2008. The winners were announced during a star-studded ceremony held at London’s Hampton Court Palace in front of the awards’ patron Prince Charles, and was fully televised by Sky 1 and broadcast on the 18th December.

The event was designed and managed in it’s entirety by ESC Events Ltd. We arrived on site on the 2nd December to construct several marquee structures including a 242m walkway complete with red carpet (which was confirmed as the longest in the UK) from the palace to the marquee. By the 15th December, the newly constructed venue was ready for technical rehearsals and the arrival of the film crews and over 200 staff.

At 18:00hrs on the 16th December the 320 guests began to arrive at the palace. The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall held their own private drinks reception in the Orangery for all the nominees, whilst all other guests were treated to Champagne and canapés in The Great Hall. After an hour, The Band Of The Lifeguards’ trumpeters announced dinner with a fanfare, and guests were invited to the main marquee. On their journey up the red carpet, guests were offered a glass of mulled wine by six of The Sun’s page 3 girls to warm them up. As soon as guests and nominees were seated, filming of the awards show began. Tess Daly took to the stage, and hosted the two hour long ceremony, and was joined by numerous other celebs including The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Jeremy Clarkson, Ross Kemp, Martin Johnson, Lawrence Dalagllio, Andy McNab, Rachel Stevens, Kirsty Gallagher, John Terry, Richard Hammond and Bruce Forsyth.

Awards were presented for the following categories; Best Recruit, Support to the Armed Forces, Life Saver Award, True Grit: Individual, True Grit: Group, Best Armed Forces Animal, Most Outstanding Sailor or Marine, Most Outstanding Soldier, Most Outstanding Airman, Overcoming Adversity, Best Unit, Judge’s Award for Special Recognition. The climax of the show was the first live performance from Alexandra Burke since winning X Factor 2008. Following the show guests and nominees spent the remainder of the evening eating, drinking and catching up with colleagues and friends. The event came to a close at midnight and we popped open the Champagne with our client to celebrate a truly memorable and successful event. Feedback from all those who attended was truly outstanding and there’s already talk of next year’s Millies, and we’re looking forward to starting work on it all over again.

Farnborough Air show - July 2008

esc events secures prestigious event:
The 2008 Lambeth Conference

esc events has secured a prestigious contract to organise and manage an ‘English Country Garden’ luncheon at Lambeth Palace for Bishops from Anglian Communion’s all over the World who are attending the 2008 Lambeth Conference in July.

The highly anticipated event takes place only once every ten years by personal invitation from the Archbishop of Canterbury where bishops have the unique opportunity to meet together for worship, study and conversation.

esc events is very proud to be asked for it’s expertise and assistance in organising such a prestigious event, and one that truly highlights how esc has established itself within the events industry.

Farnborough Air show - July 2008
Yet again, esc events have been asked to plan a full week’s event schedule for one of Farnborough Air shows largest participants, IAE – International Aero Engines.

As has been the case in previous years, IAE have sought the assistance of esc to plan 3 days worth of events, entertaining their clients as well as some of the more sensible issues of seminars and business meetings.

As we are welcoming IAE to our shores this year we are therefore in the process of finalizing some of London’s finest venues for the week’s proceedings, including a driving experience that Jeremy Clarkson would be jumping at the bit to try.

Site Services 2007
Over the course of this summer esc events has provided the many aspects of Site Management at many of the leading Historical Venues throughout the UK.

The many different components of a site, such as Security, Site Offices, Trackway, Toilets, Fencing, Lighting and Safey Equipment etc… have all been provided by esc events for various sites the length and breadth of the country.

On several occasions over the past year we were charged with overseeing the whole site from day 1 to the final hand over back to the venue ensuring it was ‘as we found it’.

A team of experienced Site Security personnel working with a seasoned Site Managers ensured the smooth running and organisation of the various contractors on site. A strict Health and Safety Code in operation made sure that all personnel were safe and secure whilst working on our site.

We take pride in our work at the many important Historical venues we provide Site Management for and treat the venue as our own. We work closely with the venues Management to ensure that everything progresses efficiently and that integrity of the venue is upheld. Particulary when the venue is still open to the Public, extra care must be taken to ensure safety for all is maintained.

What the Venue said after the handover...

“As we have discussed many times, the exceptional nature of Hampton Court Palace as an Historical building means that it is so important to work with an event company that you can trust. The good working relationship that we have established over the yearsmeans I am always confident that the Palace and it’s grounds are being well looked after. I know that esc events will do what they promise and carry out their work with the minimum of distruption or damage to my site. The excelent plans, schedules and briefings you provide to are always strictly adhered to and things always happen when and how you say they will.

That said on these large scale events there are the inevitable hiccups, but they are always dealt with quickly and efficiently. I am always relaxed when I know esc events are on site and as we both know that is not always the case!!!”

Gazprom Team Build
esc events were tasked with providing a Team Building Event for 100 people. Taking on the challenge we transported all 100 staff from their offices in Kingston in luxury coaches, deep into the heart of Ashdown Forest at Ashdown Park Hotel and Country Club.

Once the guests had arrived and checked into their rooms, the fun and games began. Team building exercises designed to be challenging and interesting as well as fun tested the teams. The activities were linked to the Insights Discovery System, using colour as the common language for self-understanding, effective interaction and organisational growth. Afterwards the teams were explained the findings and discussions about the findings led to valuable insight about the groups.

After freshening up, guests all gathered for an evening of sumptuous dining with entertainment in the form of an Antique Auction and one of the top live Bands around performed to a packed dance floor.

After the event the client said: “Everything ran so smoothly. From the moment we left to office to the end of a very loe were looked after and did not have to think about thng day, we event, other than enjoying ourselves’. We also now understand more clearly how our team works and performs together”.

Huge 50th at Palace
esc events staged a huge 50th Birthday celebration for a private client. The esc events team were based from a site office in Hampton Court Palace for the duration of the 2 week build. Within the large marquee structure the focus was on the bespoke crafted stage to house the piano of one A List performer lined up to entertain the birthday boy and his special guests.

With an event of this size co-ordinating and scheduling the many suppliers was no mean feat!! Working with some of the best caterers and designers in the industry we were charged with creating a once in a life time event for the client. All the elements had to be original and breathtaking to mark this special occasion.

A dramatic setting against this most historical of venues, delicious food, beautiful flowers, fireworks and of course one hell of a show all complimented each other for what was a fantastic evening…

What did the client have to say the next day…
“Now I’ve sobered up… I just wanted to say many thanks for a brilliantly executed party on Thursday night. The whole thing went like clockwork and I would like to thank everyone on your team for everything they did to contribute to a great event. The feedback from everyone has been simply ‘wow!’…Many thanks again for a spectacular evening.”

What the venue had to say after the handover…
“On a personal note, I have worked closely with John Wickens and his team at Hampton Court Palace for many years. Over this time I have experienced a truly professional team who always go that extra mile for a client whilst always keeping an eye on the projection of the venue they are working at. They are versatile and experienced in having to shift and change at a moments notice to get the job done at the highest standard.”

Grant & Anthea's Summer Ball - July 2007
This glittering event in the social calendar held at the country estate in Surrey of Grant & Anthea is to raise money in aid of the Chase and Debra charities. The guest list included endless celebrities keen to lend their support to these worthwhile charities. esc events was delighted to be asked to get involved with this fantastic event. And so it was we came to provide a variety of furniture, heaters for the event and valet park the cars of some of Britian’s most notable celebrities!!

Chantilly, Paris - July 2007
A jaw dropping wedding which was held in Chateau Chantilly in Paris required a highly co-ordinated transport system. Twelve coaches from all over Central Paris brought the exquisitely dressed guests to the celebrations. This task was complicated further by the extensive road closures in place all over Paris due to it being the final day of the Tour de France.

The dramatic backdrop to the Valet Parking service esc provided combined with the sumptuous setting and glamourous guests made it one special night!!

Cairo - June 2007
The largest valet parking job ever undertaken by esc events took place in Cairo for an eminent Doctor.

A team of esc’s most experienced staff flew out to work alongside local crew in the valet parking of guests cars and co-ordinating of chauffeur cars for nearly 2500 guests. The extreme heat made it a challenging event – but the glimpse of the Pyramids made it one event our staff will never forget!!

Paris Airshow - June 2007
During Paris Airshow week in June we were charged with entertaining customers of IAE — International Aero Engines.

We were asked to put together 2 days of events which included entertaining their clients customers on the Monday and organising their Signature Event on the Wednesday night. On Monday following a seminar held at the prestigious Pavillion Royal guests had a blast at one of Europe's largest free fall wind tunnels. Here they were able to experience the sensation of a free fall sky dive without leaving the ground!!

Wednesday was the big event. Held in the beautiful gardens of Pavillion Royal; we re-created 19 century Paris. Theming and lighting all combined to create the Moulin Rouge theme. Flamboyant chefs provided culinary delights, created before the guests very eyes — including that old favourite Crepe Suzettes!! But it was the energetic troupe of Can Can dancers that delighted guests and made it a night to remember!!

Happy Birthday esc
On Tuesday 17th April esc celebrated it's 10th Birthday. From humble beginnings based out of a tiny office in Woking the company has moved to a lovely barn in Farnham in May 2005.

Originally set up to provide a variety of support services and hire items to the events industry, Event Support Company (as it was then known) has gradually increased it's range of services and now work regularly alongside some of the biggest and best Event Managers in the UK. And, of course, enjoying flourishing and happy relationships with our own increasing portfolio of clients on their special event projects.

The company image has been updated a couple of times over the years, the most notable change being the big rebrand in 2002 when we shortened the company name to esc events – more representative of the work we were starting to undertake.

So what next for esc events? Moving into it's second decade we look forward to another 10 years of success, continuing to deliver memorable events that exceed our client expectations and create a lasting impression.

Ribs on the thames outside House of Commons

Thames Blast
In July 2006 esc created waves in London!!
An international Aviation company set us the challenge of entertaining a group of 30 adrenaline junkies for the afternoon. Coming from a long morning meeting we collected them from the front of the hotel in a big Yellow Duck vehicle (causing a few raised eyebrows), which trundled its way through the busy London streets to the MI6 building where it suddenly drove straight into the river!!

The propellers took over and they started their cruise down stream to Lambeth Bridge Pier. All very pleasant but not exciting so far… Docking at the Pier guests finally caught sight of the vessels on which all the fun was to be had!! Boarding a fleet of 8 metre ribs our guests were motored down the river past London's riverside landmarks.

Ribs on the thames outside House of Commons

What a Summer!
What a summer indeed, with esc events building yet further on the number of projects and events that our clients rely upon us to deliver and support. With hardly time to draw breath, business focus is already swinging away from the peak summer period and shifting towards the next seasonal peak – Christmas!

Probably one of the more challenging events we've been involved with managing was a reception at Wrotham Park in Hertfordshire. The grand, imposing 18 th Century Palladian house set in glorious grounds was the setting for a stunning wedding reception in late June.

esc's task? To arrange and manage the chauffeur transport of 250 guests and celebrities to and from the event. With the green light given just one week before the reception, we were tasked with co-ordinating and confirming 130 luxury, chauffeur driven vehicles from various London/Home County locations, ensuring departures and timely arrivals.

With one week to pull the event together, confirming relevant details to all parties, we eventually moved to Wrotham Park to be on-hand to facilitate smooth arrivals and then various departure times. The field of S Class Mercedes and top-of-the-range MPVs seemed to stretch forever until gradually diminishing as the last guests departed in the early hours of the following morning.

The challenge facing an event of this magnitude, given the incredibly short lead time, and the success in carrying it off bears testament to the dedication, patience and experience of the esc events team.

Perhaps it was the client that summed it up best:

“Dear Mark, Paul and esc team,

I hope that you have all recovered from Friday, and the run up to it!

Thank you all so much for every thing, the transport would not have happened or have run so smoothly with out esc.

We’re all feeling a little shell shocked at this end but it’s on to the next one.

Thank you all so much again.

Love

Catherine”

And so, it’s on to Christmas!

New Events Manual launched
Central to the process of launching our newly redesigned website was the intention of providing our clients with a clear idea of who we are, the nature of events we have been involved with and what it is that sets us apart from the competition.

In parallel with this we produced and launched both our “escape for a while” Corporate Brochure and our Event Manual, many of which are now out in the market place, garnering praise, as we underline our commitment to the events business in an eye catching and professional fashion.

The Corporate “escape for a while” Brochure is an extension of our website and serves as a tasteful, exciting and vibrant introduction to the world of event management that corporate clients now expect from esc.

The Event Manual is a comprehensive guide to the huge range of event support services we now offer the industry. The easy to follow directory of services has been well received by our regular clients and we have an on-going commitment to ensure it reaches the majority of organisers by the end of the year.

As part of the on-going process of development of our website, both the “escape for a while” brochure and the Event Manual are now available as a download from the site. Just click on the version you require for your event and then contact us to experience the difference esc bring to the world of events.

You can be assured that you'll always receive a prompt, friendly and professional service backed up by combined 45 years worth of experience and passion for events.

New Office
Not content with their office in Woking, esc recently embarked on relocation to Wishanger Farm Estate at Churt, near Farnham. Combining office and warehouse, they shunned convention and moved into two Portakabins within a warehouse – an unusual arrangement which provided a temporary base until the new office was built. Alongside several purpose built warehouses, there also stood a derelict old barn. Seeing the potential in this, esc commissioned the building of a brand new barn where traditional style meets new technology in what will soon be a new state-of-the-art office for esc.

Housing the entire team, meeting rooms and office storage the barn will supply esc with the platform from which to provide its clients with the highest quality of service for all their event requirements. The rural setting amongst the scenic rolling hills and fields of Surrey provides a welcome contrast to the busy and crowded streets of London and other major cities where esc and their clients spend most of their working lives.

Traffic Logistics
For 4 years running esc have worked with one of their clients on a 3 day conference in East Sussex, providing traffic management within the estate grounds to ensure 20,000 people passed in and out of the site quickly and efficiently.

In 2005 the job was made harder still by the unpredictable October English weather, which supplied rain in over-generous quantities! This potentially disastrous situation was counteracted by the infrastructure esc had implemented which allowed traffic to move quickly and smoothly over the 3 days.

Trackway, signage and traffic flow systems ensured a successful event despite the challenging circumstances, and we hope the presence of esc this year will help to make the same event bigger and better than ever.
